ROLE OF THE HLDB AND THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY & DAIRYING

The activities of the department like Fodder and Seed production, maintenance of Livestock Farm at Government Livestock Farm, Hisar as well as production of Semen and its supply which prior to the constitution of the Board were being undertaken by the department are now being looked after by the Board and the department is taking care of the Veterinary Care and other alike activities. Thus in general the Board is catering to the breeding needs of the farmers in so far as the livestock especially milch animals are concerned and the department is taking care of the health aspect of the livestock.

ENHANCING PRODUCTIVITY

Haryana Livestock Development Board’s emphasis is on raising productivity through an integrated approach to animal management focused on Breeding, Nutrition and Health Management, which is being implemented through various institutions and farms as detailed below.

GOVERNMENT LIVESTOCK FARM

To meet the demand of camels and bullocks, the farm was established in the year 1809 by Maor Lumsdaine. Afterwards, the breeding work of bull production as well as milk production of Hariana cow was undertaken at this Farm. At present not only Hariana cows but also other indigenous breeds viz. Tharparkar & Sahiwal as well as crossbreeds are being reared. The main objective of the farm is to produce elite pedigreed bulls of Hariana Sahiwal, Tharparkar as well as that of exotic breeds for breed improvement.

AGRICULTURE SECTION

Success of every programme depends upon the adequacy of inputs such as feeding and management. With the introduction of cross breeding programme in Cattle. It has become all the more important to provide nutritious fodder to cross bred and high yielding animals for better exploitation of milk potential. Keeping this in view, the Board has activated its own fodder seed farm to fulfill the requirement of fodder and good quality seed.

EMBRYO TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY

This modern technology of embryo transfer will be introduced in the State through Haryana Livestock Development Board. An amount of Rs. 6.04 lacs has been provided by the Board for this purpose. An ultra modern Laboratory with latest equipment is situated at Hisar. The state has already taken a lead in this field by producing three calves using this technology under field like conditions.

PRODUCTION OF QUALITY SEMEN

To take up the breeding programme in a more scientific way, emphasis is being laid on production of high quality semen in the state. Keeping this in view, the Haryana Livestock Development Board has taken steps to centralize the production of semen only at three places viz. Hisar, Gurgaon & Jagadhari and these centres have been strengthened by providing latest infrastructure and equipments.
